Pig Farms
Pig farms are part of a unique micro-industry model that especially works well in rural villages in The Philippines.
The piggery starts off in the initial stages by giving a Pastor one pregnant female pig, which they normally store, around their house or on their land. Normally high bred pigs give birth to approximately 14 piglets.
As the pigs give birth By Faith Ministries supplies the Pastor with building materials to build a number of pig cages to accommodate the pig families and a ‘community working bee’ is held to help set up the cages and also to allow the whole community to participate in the project and to see how starting an industry is a way out of poverty.
From each litter of pigs the Pastor is required to keep one female pig for breeding stock, give one female pig away to another family in the community to start their own farm, give another pig to the Pastor who started their stock, and then the rest is available for the Pastor to sell.
A full-grown pig ready for breeding sells for 3800p (AU $92), the piglets sell for 1800peso (AU $40) each.
This industry can provide income for an entire family and also supports a domino effect of families coming out of poverty as each micro-industry sets up further pig networks. Donations to By Faith Ministries are truly used to its fullest potential and the poor are not reliant on money from others to be able to provide for themselves and help the needy around them.
A one-off payment of AU $375 can set up an entire pig network. Click here to donate or pay for a pig network.
